And the Western Cape Food Zone intermedia cricket champions of 2012 are … The Front Row Grunters!
Sensational skills from fellow Grunters Neil Jennings, Martin Tucker, Steve Forde, Dave Brooke and Andrew Young … which included emptying a cooler box before the final 🙂
The Food Zone intermedia six a side cricket tournament is a classic day organised by Brad Bing of Sporting Chance, and sees 10 teams made up of various local media houses taking to the lawn to smash a few sixes and burgle the odd wicket in the name of fun and a great charity …
Invited to participate in the tournament for the first time, there were not many quick singles from the Front Row Grunters, who’s Canterbury shirts had so many x’s in the labels that a local porn site asked if they could sponsor us!
But the odd boundary, some deft death bowling and the odd swiftly taken ice cold beverage saw us ease past E-TV, the Expresso boys and the Independent Deadly Deadlines. Which was enough to win us Pool A, thankfully, as a desperately poor post liquid lunch game saw the Grunters unravel against the exuberant Hectic 9’s …
As is the case with most tournament winning sides, though, there is always that often needed wake up game, and one just has to hope it does not come in a tournament decider …
So it was onto the final against the manne from Top Billing, who had topped Pool B. I won the toss for the first time that day and decided to bat, the thinking being having the runs on the board in a final would just add to the pressure the opposition would be feeling in the decider.
The Grunters posted an entertaining 60 runs in 5 overs, which included a six Albie Morkel would have been proud of from Tuckbox, and then had the Top Billing boys needing 7 off the last over to win the tournament … A special two wicket over from Andrew Young did the business and the victory champagne was cracked …
It really is a fun day that sees the media fraternity get to mix with the “enemy”, and through the Food Zone sponsorship, Sporting Chance were able to raise enough money to employ two more people to perform their valuable sporting clinics in under priviledged areas.
A few pics then …

Cracker of a day, well done Skipper.
Glad you had fun…we reckon it was the WAGS-factor that did it for you!
