Tank’s guest on the Front Row Grunt show on 2oceansvibe.com on Wednesday evening was former Blue Bulls and Scotland tighthead prop, Pukke coach, and now forward coach of WP and the Stormers, Matthew Proudfoot. Born in Klerksdorp, Matt played 4 times for Scotland, his link to the land of haggis being his paternal grandfather.
Take a listen as Tank and Matt chat through their meetings as players at SAU and the SA U23 trials at Loftus. How Matt actually ended up playing in Scotland and then for the national side, the injuries he picked up as a player, coaching in Potch, his views on both the Varsity Cup and Community Cup, and how he believes that the professional and amateur arms of rugby should never meet
Obviously with two tightheads in one room, a fair amount of time was spent talking about the scrum … The trend for props to try and play both sides … The new law stating that a full front row be on the bench … Brok Harris, Pat Cilliers, Frans Malherbe … Should WP not have invested in a seasoned gorilla a while back? What has changed the most about scrumming in recent times? Is the scrum still as important to a team as it used to be?
And of course Tank got Matt’s take on the Boks …
