Now that Western Province are the 2012 Currie Cup champions, having beaten the Sharks in the final last Saturday, it’s time to have a look at this year’s final TV audience numbers, as always, courtesy of RepucomSA …
Average audience for the Final was 1 136 041, which is the highest audience across ALL Currie Cup matches over the past 5 years!
Peak audience for the final was 1 305 091
For the first time in a few years, SABC did not show the final, but highlights were broadcast on SABC 2, attracting an average audience of 617 172 viewers.
Average audience for the tournament up 36% on 2011
56.2% of the audience watched 75% or more of the broadcast before changing channels
Positive increase in a Year on Year comparison of primary coverage can be attributed to the increase in the total available audience from 2011 to 2012 as well as the fact the only 6 teams competed in 2012, compared to 8 teams in 2011 including the Pumas and Leopards.
The audience reach during games featuring the Leopards and Pumas in 2011 was 36% lower compared to the overall league average in 2011. The variance across the 6 teams in 2012 is less, with games featuring Griquas attracting the lowest viewership and games featuring the Sharks attracting the highest average audience.
