South African franchises experienced a tough weekend in the eighth round of the 2014 SupeRugby tournament, which was also reflected in the rankings on the Vodacom Rugby Stats App.

Statistics from the App, one of the most comprehensive rugby stats in the world, show South African players only dominated three of the categories last weekend.

Cheetahs flyhalf Johan Goosen was the leading points-scorer in Round 8, contributing 23 points to the Cheetahs draw via four conversions and five penalties.

Behind him is Hurricanes flyhalf Beauden Barrett and Jason Woodward of the Rebels on 20 points apiece, and are followed by the Highlanders’ Lima Sopoaga (18 points) and Sias Ebersohn of the Force with 15 points. His five penalty conversions are the second most for the weekend behind Barrett on six with Sopoaga, Mike Harris of the Res and Ebersohn all tied on four each.

Five players scored 2 tries, including Cheetahs scrumhalf Sarel Pretorius. Three are Chiefs players – Asaeli Tikoirotuma, Augustine Pulu and Tim Nanai-Williams, along with the Brumbies’ Pat McCabe.

South African teams continue to dominate the tackling area with Bulls captain Flip van der Merwe making 22 tackles in his side’s match against the Hurricanes to lead the category. The Reds’ Beau Robinson (18) came in second.

Lineouts won on own throw is headed up by Michael Rhodes of the Stormers, on nine.  In second place is the Chiefs’ Brodie Retallick with seven, while Van der Merwe and Lions captain Warren Whiteley took six apiece with Hayden Triggs of the Blues taking five balls.
