JC heads to France

Seemingly not hugely fulfilled by what the Lions have to offer via their “Lions Challenge” fixtures while out of Super Rugby, JC Janse van Rensburg is heading to France.

French side Bayonne have signed props Gert Muller, from Agen, and JC Janse van Rensburg, from the Lions. Muller, 27, arrived at Agen in 2010, but has played little this season following ankle surgery while Janse van Rensburg, also 27, has played 47 times for Lions in the Super15.

Without doubt one of the best scrummaging loosehead props in the country, hence his eventual call up to the Bok squad last year, Van Rensburg was one of the few big name players who chose to remain with the Lions out of loyalty to the union. But loyalty does not pay the bills, or get you game time, something he will need if wanting to impress Bok coach Heyneke Meyer.

Bayonne have been busily recruiting with next season in mind.

Fiji wing Saimoni Vaka, flank Jean Monribot, Argentine fullback Martin Bustos Moyano, Kiwi fullback Stephen Brett and scrumhalf Mathieu Belie have also been brought on board.
