It’s so close I can almost smell it … The start of the rugby season that is …
Saracens paid us a visit, Rassie resigned, the Bok coach announcement is imminent, the Sharks have pulled out of the Tri-Series warm up, Andries Bekker, Juan Smith and Duane Vermeulen are on their way back from injury, the Bulls don’t know where to play Hougaard, the Lions are sucking up to their bank manager …
But nothing says start of the season more than Cape Town Tens …
The brainchild of Bob Skinstad and Rob Fleck is net om die hoek … Taking place on Friday and Saturday, 3 and 4 February at Hammies Rugby Club, this year’s Tens includes a pretty cool music line-up, appearances from local and international rugby legends, competitions and giveaways, and an exciting new rugby expo.
Smashing out a few tunes to get you in the mood will be Goodluck, The Graeme Watkins Project, The Lightyears and Me and Mr Brown. And with three rugby fields, beer and food tents, kiddies play areas, as well as Cape Town’s “Hoi Paloi” who basically move across from the Met the weekend before, there is plenty to experience both on and off the rugby field for the whole family.
Enjoy a drink (or three) with mates in the beer tent while watching the rugby action and the kids will be entertained at the same time in the play area.
This year the number of teams has been increased from 56 to 72, with four divisions – a heavy and light Beer League, The Vets League and the more competitive Premier League.
Rugby legends this year include Leon Lloyd, Malcolm O’Kelly, Justin Marshall and David Rees, and local yokels Skinstad, Fleck, Jake Boer, Breyton Paulse, John Allen and Pieter Muller.
You can also win a Golf GTI to the value of R365 000 if you slot more conversions than anyone else, so hit that practice tee future Morne Steyns …
Tickets are on sale at R70 per person via Computicket on www.computicket.com. Kids under 12 are free.
Also new this year is a snazzy night at The Grand to kick things off on the Thursday night … So if you have a few clients you want to show a good time, this is your game …
Have been waiting for this the whole of December and January. European rugby is just not what we are used to here in the Southern Hemisphere. Just wish I could be down in Cape Town to see the Tens. Maybe next year.
