Where will those Stormers and Bulls finish? It’s time to get serious about the Super Rugby log … Predict the correct final log and you could win a Million Bucks!
Tank Lanning
As said before, Super Rugby is factually the most unpredictable rugby tournament in the world, especially early on in the season, and especially given the starts from the Lions, Bulls and Stormers!
So to take a stab at what the Super Rugby log will look like after the league stage of the tournament is a bloody tough ask! But given the chance to take home R 1 000 000.00 for my troubles, I am prepared to take a stab!
You have to have your log submitted by midnight tonight though!
Former international referee, Jonathan Kaplan, the man who holds the record for the most international matches as referee, has been appointed as Brand Ambassador to main competition sponsor, BetFlash, and as such has predicted his final log standings on the myPredictor site. It makes for interesting reading:
Crusaders
Waratahs
Sharks
Chiefs
Reds
Stormers
Brumbies
Blues
Hurricanes
Bulls
Rebels
Highlanders
Cheetahs
Force
Lions
My predicted final log table looked prior to the start of the tournament looked like this:
Chiefs
Sharks
Waratahs
Crusaders
Bulls
Brumbies
Stormers
Blues
Reds
Hurricanes
Cheetahs
Highlanders
Rebels
Force
Lions
But given the action in the first 2 rounds, I am going to go with:
Chiefs
Sharks
Waratahs
Crusaders
Brumbies
Blues
Reds
Hurricanes
Stormers
Cheetahs
Highlanders
Bulls
Rebels
Force
Lions
An amazing start from the Lions. Plenty heart, guts and passion. But that can only fuel you for so long, and I think they will unravel. It is looking more and more likely that the Sharks will be the only side who will challenge for quarter final honours this year. This while the Aussie sides have not looked too shabby! Which makes the bottom 9 spots pretty damn difficult to predict!

To get an idea of how people are thinking re the top 6, BetFlash will give you the following odds on a top six finish of:
5/1 – SHA, CHI, RED, CRU, BRU, STO
10/1 – CHI, SHA, BRU, CRU, STO, CHE
20/1 – CRU, BRU, SHA, CHI, RED, STO
20/1 – BRU, CRU, STO, SHA, CHI, BLU
35/1 – CHI, SHA, RED, BLU, CHE, CRU
35/1 – CRU, STO, WAR, CHI, SHA, RED
40/1 – STO, CHI, BRU, BUL, CRU, BLU
50/1 – CHI, RED, BUL, CRU, BRU, SHA
With 2 SA sides in all of them, I am not sure I would dabble on any of those options, and I would certainly stay clear of the option with the Stormers at the top. I am not sure any odds would get me to put even R10 on it! 10/1 and you include both the Stormers and Cheetahs in a top 6 finish? Should be 100/1!
The Tahs have lost a good flew players like Barnes, Carter, Mitchell and Turner, but they have a strong pack and play the kind of rugby that will see them win more games than they lose. And with the Brumbies having lost Jake White, I think they will be the Aussie side to get that third place courtesy of finishing top of the Aussie pile.
The Chiefs and Crusaders will always be there and there about, it’s just about which of the two will finish top of the Kiwi pile … I am going with the defending champs …

To this weekend then …
My predictions:
CRUSADERS to beat Blues by 5
CHEETAHS to beat Rebels by 7
HURRICANES to beat Stormers by 13
CHIEFS to beat Highlanders by 11
WARATAHS to beat Reds by 4
BRUMBIES to beat Force by 4
BULLS to beat Lions by 11
The BetFlash odds:
CRU,CHE,STO,BULLS,WAR – 3.5
CRU,CHE,STO,LIO,WAR – 10
CRU,REB,STO,LIO,WAR – 15
BLU,CHE,STO,BULLS,REDS – 15
CRU,CHE,HUR,LIO,WAR – 20
BLU,REB,STO,BULLS,REDS – 20
BLU,CHE,HUR,BULLS,REDS – 30
BLU,REB,HUR,BULLS,REDS – 33
CRU,REB,HUR,LIO,WAR – 35
So no odds at all on my predicted winners, but 3.5 on the Stormers coming out on top rather than the Canes, and 20 on the Lions getting past the Bulls. Both are distinct possibilities, so to get 20/1 on wins for the CRU, CHE, HUR, LIO, WAR would attract my hard earned cash.
R10 on that and you get a case of beer and a packet of chips in return!
R50 on that and you hosting 4 mates to an all fall down braai next weekend!
as per twitter
thanks for releasing on Thursday
helps with superbru picks 🙂
Ha … Only a pleasure … Use at your own peril though! Think Lions could easily beat Bulls, and would not be that surprised to see Stormers bounce back
What, the Stormers not in the playoffs?
Did you not see them against the Lions?
Tane Randall made the point about how many SA teams have picked up the wooden spoon since inception and now they want 6 teams.
He is probably right. Only Sharks are looking good so far. Lions have plenty of heart and will fight hard this year. Stormers are still sunbathing.Cheetahs are still the honest men of rugby and will get better. Bulls are Tswane and are lost.
Yep, I agree fully with Taine. We are doing it for political and not rugby reasons
