S15 – High roads and Low roads

Tank Lanning

The good news is that the Bulls and Sharks have their destiny in their own hands, needing a bonus point win to guarantee themselves a place in the final six, but if the Reds do not get a bonus point win against the Tahs, then a just a win will be good enough as they will have won more games than the Canes. If the Reds loose to the Tahs and the Canes to the Chiefs, then it’s a free ride to the top six!

If the Canes do beat the Chiefs, then the Stormers, now guaranteed SA conference winners, will just need a losing bonus point against the Rebels to top the log! The Chiefs need a bonus point win against the Canes to guarantee themselves top spot on the log. Miss out on a bonus point against the Canes, and the Stormers could usurp them with a bonus point win against the Rebels …

A look at the Super Rugby weekend …

Results:
Lions 37 – 32 Rebels
Cheetahs 6 – 13 Stormers
Waratahs 15 – 19 Brumbies
Blues 32 – 9 Force
Sharks 32 – 10 Bulls
Reds 19 – 13 Highlanders
Chiefs 21 – 28 Crusaders

The Log:
Chiefs Pld:15 W:12 Pts:63
Stormers Pld:15 W:13 Pts:62
Brumbies Pld:15 W:10 Pts:58
Crusaders Pld:15 W:10 Pts:56
Bulls Pld:15 W:9 Pts:54 (PD 86)
Sharks Pld:15 W:9 Pts:54 (PD 69)

Reds Pld:15 W:10 Pts:53 (PD -4)
Hurricanes Pld:15 W:9 Pts:53 (PD 57)
Highlanders Pld:16 W:9 Pts:46
Cheetahs Pld:15 W:5 Pts:38
Waratahs Pld:15 W:4 Pts:35
Rebels Pld:15 W:4 Pts:31
Blues Pld:15 W:3 Pts:28
Force Pld:15 W:3 Pts:27
Lions Pld:15 W:3 Pts:25

Next weekend’s fixtures:
Fri 13 July
09:35 Hurricanes vs Chiefs, Wellington
Sat 14 July
07:30 Brumbies vs Blues, Canberra
09:35 Crusaders vs Force, Christchurch
11:40 Reds vs Waratahs, Brisbane
15:00 Stormers vs Rebels, Cape Town
17:05 Sharks vs Cheetahs, Durban
19:10 Bulls vs Lions, Pretoria

The scenarios: High road … Low road …
Stormers High: Chiefs lose to the Canes or beat them without getting a bonus point and the Stormers beat the Rebels with a bonus point, taking them to the top of the log and a guaranteed home semi final, and potential final.
Stormers Low: They lose to the Rebels while the Brumbies beat the Blues with a bonus point, meaning they end 3rd on the log and having to play a home quarter final against the side ending 6th on the log.

Bulls high: The beat the Lions with a bonus point while the Crusaders lose to the Force, ending 4th on the log and having to play 5th in a home quarter final.
Bulls low: They lose to the Lions while the Sharks beat the Cheetahs, and the Reds and Canes either win, or they both lose, but Reds lose while sneaking a losing bonus point which takes them to 54 log points, and with more wins, the Reds would end above them on the log, meaning no quarter final.

Sharks high: They beat Cheetahs with a bonus point while Crusaders and Bulls lose, taking them to 4th on the log and needing to play 5th on the log in a home quarterfinal
Sharks low: They lose to the Cheetahs while the Reds and Canes either win, or they both lose, but the Reds lose while sneaking a losing bonus point which takes them to 54 log points, and with more wins, the Reds would end above them on the log.

The highly likely scenario, though, is that the Crusaders will beat the Force and end 4th on the log, getting a home quarter final against the 5th placed side. So who would you rather play, Brumbies or Crusaders? Meaning the Bulls and Sharks might be playing to try and end 6th on the log rather than 5th!

Spicy finish this … And the great thing for the SA sides is that they are playing the last 3 games of the weekend, so will know exactly what they need to do …

  1. Just wonder what everybody is thinking about the Bulls playing sexy ry=ugby and losing?

    • Not sure it was that sexy Dave … Can’t play rugby being man handled like that up front. Steyn and Bismark exceptional, Spies and Olivier dhadows … Over

  2. Hi Tank, quick unrelated question… Is that you on the new tv ad? The Stotmers supporter with the raining cloud? Just checking?
